Within a Policy Framework? Exploring indigenous childhood memories in a museum context
by Michelle Webb and Brian Shepherd
Abstract
This article will report on a small museum's experiences in implementing the Museum Australia's Previous Possessions, New Obligations (PPNO) policy. The Museum of Childhood is currently working on an exhibition that looks at the experiences of Indigenous children in Western Australia. The exhibition relies heavily on the use of oral histories and testimonies.
Shepherd will examine the processes by which memories are collected, transmitted and received drawing on recent work in cultural theory and the use of memory in a museum context. He will also look at the positioning of small community museums in relation to the implementation of PPNO.
Webb will report on issues of protocol and procedures as well as examining some of the issues and problems that need to be addressed when working cooperatively with Indigenous people and communities. She will also address some of the issues associated with working with memory and the use of oral testimonies as museum objects.
