To use the simple keyword search, enter your key words or
phrases separated by commas. For example, if you are searching
generally for military or war objects, you might enter 'military, war'
into the simple keyword field at the top of the search page.
This would give you a list of all objects in the AMOL database
that match those two words, followed by a list of records
that might match either one of these words. The relevance
of the match is indicated by the stars next to each object
record.
Select a region (optional): If you know which region
you want to search, you can limit your search to this region
only by selecting the region name from this dropdown box.
You can also select more than one region by holding down the
CTRL key and clicking on several region names.
Select a category (optional): If you would like to
narrow your search to one of the five categories (People,
Collections, Objects, Localities, Historic Sites) simply select
a category this dropdown box
Golden Threads can be searched precisely by using boolean
logic. Boolean logic allows you to enter multiple search terms
and define how they are to be used in the search by connecting
them with 'operators'. Common boolean search operators include:
<AND> selects records that contain all of the search
terms you use. For example:
war <AND> uniform
<OR> selects documents that have at least one of the
search terms you use. For example:
war <OR> military
<NOT> excludes some words from the search. For example:
war <AND> uniform <NOT> second world
You can use all of these operators together. For example:
war <OR> military <AND> uniform
<NOT> photograph
